The Toronto Santa Claus Parade is the largest Santa Claus parade in Canada . Started in 1905, it is one of the largest parades in the world. More than a half million people attend the parade every year.

Features of the Toronto Santa Claus Parade

Started in 1905 by the Eaton’s chain of department stores, with just a single float, the Toronto Santa Clause Parade has expanded to feature over 30 floats, 25 bands and more than 1,500 participants. The parade lasts approximately 90 minutes with the parade starting at 12:30pm and television coverage starting at 1:30pm.

Toronto Santa Clause Parade Route

Many Streets around the downtown core are shut down from morning to afternoon of the day of the parade.

Watching the Toronto Santa Claus Parade

The best spots to watch the Toronto Santa Claus Parade are on Bloor and the top of University, which happens to be the starting area of the parade. Keep in mind that these spots often fill up quite fast.

Getting to the Toronto Santa Claus Parade

There are many ways to get to the Toronto Santa Claus Parade but the best way to get to the parade is by using public transportation. Driving and parking in downtown Toronto is already pretty stressful but it is even worst during parades and special events. There are various bus and subway routes from the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) that pass along the parade route. There are also various options available with the GO Transit Network.

Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival is North America’s largest documentary festival, conference and market. The Hot Docs film Festival features over 170 documentaries from more than 35 countries. Each year, the Festival presents a selection of more than 150 cutting-edge documentaries from Canada and around the globe.

Hot Docs Features

Hot Docs features Canadian and international competitive programs, an international documentary market, The Doc Shop, and the Hot Docs Forum. With its lively mix of public and professional events, Hot Docs is the ideal North American market and meeting place for the documentary industry. The festival attracts over 2000 delegates, including documentary filmmakers, buyers, programmers, distributors and commissioning editors from around the world.

History of Hot Docs

Hot Docs was founded in 1993 by the Documentary Organization of Canada (formerly the Canadian Independent Film Caucus), a national association of independent documentary filmmakers. In 1996, Hot Docs became a separately incorporated organization with a mandate to showcase and support the work of Canadian and international documentary filmmakers and to promote excellence in documentary production.

The Hot Docs Forum

During the Festival, Hot Docs also presents the renowned Hot Docs Forum. Launched in 2000 as the Toronto Documentary Forum, this limited-seating event is focused around a slate of pre-selected project-presentations and has quickly established itself as North America’s essential international market event for buyers and sellers working in the social, cultural and political documentary genres. More than 190 broadcasters and distributors from Europe, Australia, the USA, Canada and elsewhere regularly participate and the Hot Docs Forum has proven highly successful for the projects presented, as well as the rest of the delegates. Because of its unusual format, it’s also a preeminent source of up-to-the-second market intelligence for both buyers and sellers. The Hot Docs Forum has evolved from a format developed by Amsterdam’s FORUM for the international co-financing of documentaries and their partner, the European Documentary Network (EDN).

Attending Hot Docs

The selection of documentaries in this festival is quite impressive. The movies are outstanding selections of local and international documentaries. In many cases, the filmmakers show up and partake in Q&A sessions.

The JUNO Awards is an award ceremony presented annually to Canadian music artists and bands in all aspects of music. The JUNO awards is a star-studded event which includes the JUNO awards, along with a weeklong citywide celebration of Canadian music. Prior to 1991, the JUNO awards were always held in Toronto. The JUNOs were held outside of Toronto for the first time in 1991, at Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Although the JUNO Awards are no longer an annual event for Toronto, there have been more JUNO Awards ceremonies in Toronto than any other city, with the last JUNO Award in Toronto taking place in 2011.

History of the JUNO Awards

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) was formed to oversee the annual Juno awards ceremony in 1975, the same year the Junos were broadcast on CBC-television for the first time. The Junos were first televised throughout Canada in 1975 on CBC Television.

JUNO Awards Winner Selection

Winners are currently chosen by either members of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences or a panel of experts depending on the award. In almost all of the main general categories, such as Album of the Year or Artist of the Year, nominees are determined by sales during the qualifying period; in genre-specific categories, they are determined by panel.

Toronto’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day Parades in North America. Started in 1987, the Toronto St. Patrick’s Day parade features various floats and a lively crowd read to cheer the marching bands. The Toronto St. Patrick’s Parade is organized by the St. Patrick’s Parade Society of Toronto (SPPS) . Each year, nearly 300,000 people attend the Toronto St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Features of the Toronto St. Patrick’s Day Parade

The Toronto St. Patrick’s Day Parade usually begins at noon with the procession starting from Bloor and St. George (near old U of T Varsity Stadium). Thousands of people line the streets of Toronto to listen to pipe bands, watch Irish jigs, catch chocolate coins and green beads thrown from floats and, of course, high-five a leprechaun. This celebration of all things Irish shuts down many of Downtown Toronto’s streets.

Toronto St. Patrick’s Day Parade Route

The route of Toronto’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade begins at Bloor and St. George and finishes at Nathan Phillips Square. The St. Patrick’s Day parade lasts about 90 minutes.

Getting to the Toronto St. Patrick’s Day Parade

There are many ways to get to the Toronto St. Patricks Day Parade but the best way to get to the parade is by using public transportation. Driving and parking in downtown Toronto is already pretty stressful but it is even worst during parades and special events. There are various bus and subway routes from the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) that pass along the parade route. There are also various options available with the GO Transit Network.

BIXI Toronto is Toronto’s city-wide bike-sharing program that launched in May 2011. Toronto BIXI Docking terminals allow users to pick up, and drop off bicycles from location to location, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Toronto BIXI works just like bike-sharing programs in other major cities around the world like London, Paris, Melbourne, Washington DC and Montreal. The BIXI bike sharing network is the largest in Canada.

How does Toronto BIXI Work

Designed to complement public transit, the BIXI bikes are intended to be used for one-way trips of less than 30 minutes. BIXI bikes can be picked up or dropped off at any of the 80 downtown bicycle docking terminals 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The first half hour of every ride is free, and thus rides to a docking station under a half hour are free unlimitedly. However, a $250 CAD deposit is placed on the user’s credit card for 10 days (and disappears afterwards). For more information on the exact workings of either the Toronto Bixi system, or their multiple other systems around the world, visit the Toronto BIXI website.

How to use Toronto BIXI

Go to the BIXI station nearest you, choose the bike you want, insert your BIXI-key and take the bike from its docking point. Take the bike for a ride wherever you want to go. The first 30 minutes of any trip are free. Usage fees apply for trips lasting longer than 30 minutes. Once you are finished, return the bike to any BIXI station on the network and just walk away. Memberships in the system, which will be open year-round, are $95 CAD a year.

Purchasing Toronto BIXI Passes

Anyone can purchase a 24-hour pass as a ‘casual user’ by simply swiping their credit card at a BIXI docking terminal. There is no trip fee if the bicycle is returned to a docking terminal within 30 minutes. A fee is charged for any trip longer than 30 minutes.
Regular users of the system may choose to become a BIXI subscribers, by purchasing a monthly or annual BIXI key. If you use BIXI often, BIXI keys are more convenient than having to swipe your credit card and agree to the terms and conditions for the use of the Bike at the start of each BIXI trip.

History of Toronto BIXI

Toronto BIXI launched on May 3rd, 2011, when thethe city activated 50 Bixi Bike stations, for a total of 300 bikes available for shared use. Currently, the system includes 1,000 bikes, 80 BIXI terminal locations with 1,500 docking points in Toronto’s downtown core. There are plans to expand the network as the BIXI system becomes more popular in Toronto.

The city of Toronto has a streetcar system that consists of 11 streetcar routes that operate throughout the downtown core of Toronto. Most of Toronto’s streetcar routes are concentrated around the downtown core of Toronto and travel through many of Toronto’s most popular neighborhoods. Like all public transportation in Toronto, the streetcar network of Toronto is operated by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC). It is the largest streetcar system in North America in terms of ridership, number of cars and track length. More than 50 million people ride Toronto’s streetcars every year.

About the Toronto Streetcar network

The city of Toronto has several streetcars that run through Toronto’s downtown core and pass some of Toronto’s busiest streets. The streetcars run on tracks that are located in the middle of some of Toronto’s most popular streets. Because the streetcars run on tracks that are located in the centre of the street, you need to walk across the street in order to get on or get off a streetcar. The rule is that all other traffic must yield when streetcar doors open, but it is quite possible that you may have to avoid cars during the process.

Toronto Streetcar: A Scenic way to see Toronto

Toronto’s streetcars provide a scenic way to view the streets of Toronto. They are a wonderful way to experience the excitement of Toronto’s popular streets and avenues. Since the streetcars operate on Toronto’s streets, streetcars must obey the traffic lights just like any other road vehicle. Keep in mind that streetcars are nowhere as fast as subways, so if you are in a bit of a hurry to get to your destination, then you may want to consider taking the subway or taking a taxi.

Toronto Streetcar Routes

Toronto’s TTC operates 11 streetcar routes throughout Toronto. The Toronto Streetcars all operate under the 500 series. The following is a list of all 11 streetcar routes:

501 Queen

502 Downtowner

503 Kingston Rd

504 King

505 Dundas

506 Carlton

508 Lake Shore

509 Harbourfront

510 Spadina

511 Bathurst

512 St Clair

Out of Toronto’s 11 Streetcar routes, 8 are regular streetcar routes and 3 are rush-hour only routes (502, 503 and 508)

New streetcars models

The TTC is introducing a new fleet of streetcars starting in 2012.The new modern streetcars are low-floor to ensure full accessibility, air conditioned, and carry almost two times the number of passengers current streetcars can hold. There also feature passenger safety alarms —like those on subways, and cameras on the vehicles sending images to the driver’s video screen.

The subway consists of both underground and elevated railway lines.

The Yonge-University-Spadina Line

The Yonge-University-Spadina line is probably the most important subway line for any visitor to know. This line traverses the entire downtown core of Toronto in a U-shaped path by following Yonge Street north and south from Finch Ave to King Street. the line features 14 stations in downtown Toronto and features 5 stations (Dundas, Queen, King, Union and St. Andrew) that are directly connected to Toronto’s PATH underground network. This line is connected to many of Toronto’s best hotels, shopping, attractions and restaurants.

The Bloor-Danforth Line

The Bloor-Danforth also cuts through Toronto’s downtown core, primarily in an east-west manner. The line features 6 important stops that pass through the downtown core. These stations include Bathurst, Spadina, St. George, Bay, Bloor-Yonge, and Sherbourne. This line also passes through many of Toronto’s best shopping, restaurants and attractions.

Popularity of the Toronto Subway

The subway system is a very popular mode of public transport in Toronto. Toronto’s subway is also the largest in Canada in terms of passenger usage, with over 1 million passenger trips each weekday. To locate a subway station easily in Toronto, look for the TTC street sign.

When getting around Toronto, your best option is usually the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), Toronto’s reliable and very convenient public transit system. Toronto has a very reliable mass transit system. The city features 68 km (42.5 miles) of subway line, 306 km (190 miles) of streetcar track, and thousands of kilometers of bus routes to get you around the city. There is no doubt that mass transit is the most reliable, and often cheapest way to get around the city for visitors. The TTC offers quick and convenient transportation throughout Toronto. The TTC operates streetcars, buses and subway trains around the city of Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

Toronto Mass Transit Schedule

Toronto’s public transit system is accessible throughout the day and night, with subways running Monday through Saturday from 6 AM to 1:30 AM and on Sundays from 9 AM to 1:30 AM. Most buses and street cars in Toronto run from 5 AM to 1:30 AM and most have a reduced schedule on weekends. Many of the streetcars located in downtown core operate all night long.

TTC Transfers

When boarding any of the TTC’s buses, streetcars, with a single fare, remember to always ask for a transfer. You never know when you may need it and you will not be able to get another one once you have boarded.

TTC Transit Fares

In order to board a streetcar, bus or subway train, you need to have a ticket, pass or transfer. TTC Drivers do not sell transportation fares and do not carry change so make sure to plan ahead. Note that tickets, tokens and passes can be purchased at subway station booths and other areas throughout the city of Toronto. If you plan to use public transportation during your entire visit to Toronto, you may want to consider the TTC Day Pass or other passes available by the TTC. Public transit fares are pretty reasonable in Toronto. A one-way fare, including transfer cost you C$2.50 anywhere within the city. The price mentioned above is lower for children, students, seniors. You can get further information about Toronto’s mass transit system by visiting the TTC website located at www.ttc.ca

Special TTC Passes

The Toronto TTC offers various day passes or multiple token options to choose from. These are sometimes the best options when visiting Toronto. The following are some of the most talked options for visitors:

single day passes: with a single day pass, you can ride all over the city of Toronto one fixed rate.

Family day passes: a family day pass miles, up to six members of the travel throughout any of the TTC’s regular routes across Toronto.

GTA weekly pass: if you are trying to use the TTC very regularly during your stay and plan to travel across the greater Toronto area, then you may want to consider the GTA weekly pass. This pass is valid from Monday to Monday.

Compared to other popular cities around the world, where a car is not recommended for getting around, using a car to get around Toronto is an acceptable option. Unlike New York City, London or Paris, Toronto’s streets are well-laid-out, so it is relatively simple to navigate Toronto’s streets and highways. However, it is still not recommended to get around downtown Toronto by car if you are a tourist.

Pedestrians in Toronto

In Toronto, pedestrians always have the right of way. You must stop for pedestrians. Yellow–orange overhead bars marked with black X’s indicate and often school zone. You should also look out for signs that take effect at specific times, often during rush hour where parking is prohibited and turns as well as lanes are reserved for buses and taxis. These areas are usually marked with white diamond shapes.

Driving Rules in Toronto

In Toronto, just like the rest of Canada, the speed limit is posted in kilometers. speed limits are in kilometers per hour. Highway speed limits range from 90 to 100 km/h, which is the equivalent of around 55 to 62 mi./h. Speed limits in city streets can range anywhere from 30 to 70 km/h, but most downtown areas have posted speed limits of 50 km/h. Unless otherwise posted, right turns are permitted on red lights when there is an appropriate break in traffic. Just make sure to watch out for pedestrians and cyclists also shared. In Toronto, everyone must wear a seatbelt.

Traffic in Toronto

Like all major cities, traffic in Toronto can sometimes be a nightmare, particularly rush-hour traffic. You can expect some pretty reckless drivers like in any other major city in the world, so be careful.

Parking Fees in Toronto

Parking fees in Toronto are generally quite expensive and the main reason why most people decide not to use a car to get around Toronto. Parking is particularly expensive around the downtown core of Toronto where parking is also quite difficult to come by. Many of the popular tourist areas of Toronto also tend to be quite expensive.

Toronto’s Highways

Toronto has many large freeways around the city. Most Toronto’s main freeways are in the 400 series. Toronto’s main highway artery is the 401 highway. It is one of the busiest highways in the world and Canada’s most congested freeway, particularly during rush hours. Other Toronto highways include Highway 404, Highway 427 and the Don valley Parkway (DVP). Highway 407 is Ontario’s first and only toll highway. There are no tolls, but your license plate will be electronically scanned and you will be billed were to distance traveled in time and date.

Driving with Streetcars in Toronto

Driving in downtown Toronto is quite difficult because cars must share the road with streetcars. Because streetcars routes are primarily located throughout Toronto’s downtown core, you will have to interact with streetcars, if you plan to drive in Toronto. Streetcar tracks will often grip to the wheels of your car and cause the vehicle to sway around. It’s illegal to pass the streetcar on the right while its doors are opened for passengers to embark or disembark, so pay special attention to when the streetcar makes a stop to let passengers embark/disembark

Car Rental in Toronto

All of the major car rental companies can be found in Toronto and car rental rates will vary depending on various factors. the price of the car rental depends on the size of the car, how long you are renting for, as well as where and when you will drop it off. The following is a list of some of the most popular car rental companies that you can find in Toronto.

Brookfield Place (formerly BCE Place) is one of Toronto’s most iconic office buildings. The complex contains 242,000 square metres (2,604,866 sq ft) of office space, and consists of two towers, the Bay Wellington Tower and the TD Canada Trust Tower, linked by the six-storey Allen Lambert Galleria. It is also the home of the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Visiting the Brookfield Place

Home to some of the world’s most prestigious financial and legal firms, and the corporate headquarters of many preeminent Canadian corporations, the 2.6 million square foot complex fosters business and commerce of global significance. Brookfield Place also stands as a prized example of Toronto’s cultural development and community spirit. Visited by millions of people each year, Brookfield Place is also home to the Hockey Hall of Fame and some of Toronto’s most popular dining, shopping and lifestyle destinations.

Shopping and Dining at Brookfield Place

The Concourse Level at Brookfield Place showcases a myriad of specialty shops, retail services, fast food eateries, and casual restaurants. More dining options can be found on the Ground Level, as well as luxury jewellery, designer men’s fashions and chic amenities for business, pleasure and well being.

Brookfield Place’s Allen Lambert Galleria

The Allen Lambert Galleria, sometimes described as the “crystal cathedral of commerce”, is an atrium designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava which connects Bay Street with Heritage Square. The Galleria was designed by Santiago Caltrava and actually serves to connect to two main office towers of the complex. Also of interest with Brookfield Place is the manner in which they incorporated the facades of several 1850′s building into the design of the overall structure. It has been superbly done.

Getting to Brookfield Place

Brookfield Place is located at the corner of Yonge st and Front st.
This is one of the more stunning open spaces in all of Toronto with high butresses soaring 85 feet overhead. The place seems more like a cathedral than a commercial office complex.

Toronto’s Airports

The city of Toronto has two main airports. Toronto Pearson International Airport (airport code YYZ) is just west of Toronto and happens to be the main point of landing for most domestic and international flights into the city of Toronto. Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (airport code YZT), located on the Toronto Islands, services some regional and chartered flights.

Toronto’s Pearson International Airport

The Pearson International Airport is 27 kilometers west of the city of Toronto, which is about half an hour drive from downtown. Pearson is the largest and busiest airport in Canada. The airport also goes by the names Lester B. Pearson International Airport or simply Toronto Pearson. The airport is named in honour of the late Canadian Prime Minister and Nobel Peace Prize winner Lester Bowles Pearson.

Toronto’s Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport

The Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is just a short ferry ride from Toronto’s shores and less than a couple minutes from Union Station by taxi or streetcar. It is named after Air Marshal Billy Bishop, a Canadian First World War flying ace. As of 2010, it was Canada’s 14th busiest airport and Ontario’s 3rd busiest airport by passengers and the 17th busiest Canadian airport in terms of aircraft movements.

Getting to Toronto from the Pearson International Airport

There are several options available for getting to Toronto from the airport. You’ll find most major car rental companies at both Terminal 1 and 3, open daily from 6am till 1am. The list of car rental companies in the terminals include:

The Airport Express costs $12.95 one-way, $36.25 round-trip, and runs every 20 to 30 minutes between 4am and 1am. You can get more information about the service by visiting torontoairportexpress.com

Getting to Toronto by Toronto’s Transit System (TTC )

You can also get to Toronto using the TTC, Toronto’s transit system. To do so, you can take the 192 Airport Rocket to Kipling Station or the 58A Malton to Lawrence Station, where you can connect to the subway line servicing the downtown core. Both options operate every 45 minutes.

About Riverdale Farm

Riverdale Farm was the first zoo built in Toronto, and although it no longer serves as a zoo, the animals are still there. The farm is also a place for a family outing or a place where to enjoy a quiet oasis in the middle of a busy city.

Farmers Market at Riverdale Farm

The Riverdale Farm has a farmers market from May to October. The market is located just outside of the main entrance to the farm.
